Language of Liberty Institute organized a discussion-based chit-chat session titled Liberty Chit-Chat: Social Media, Young Voters, and Misinformation to address the growing influence of social media on political opinions and civic engagement among young voters.

With young people increasingly exposed to large volumes of information including misinformation, the program aimed to raise awareness about how social media shapes political views, help participants understand misinformation and fake news, promote critical thinking and responsible information sharing, and encourage informed participation in democratic processes. The three hour session was attended by 26 participants, including students, business professionals, and a teacher, whose diverse backgrounds enriched the discussion. The program began with an introduction on the impact of social media on democratic engagement, followed by an open and interactive discussion guided by a pamphlet containing 12 key questions related to social media use, misinformation, and civic responsibility. Participants actively engaged by sharing personal experiences, exchanging opinions, and reflecting on real life scenarios, making the session inclusive and highly interactive.

As a result, participants developed an improved understanding of misinformation and its impact, gained basic skills for verifying online information, became more aware of responsible social media use, and enhanced their critical thinking abilities. Overall, the program successfully met its objectives, with participants expressing increased confidence in identifying misleading content and recognizing the importance of media literacy in strengthening democratic participation, demonstrating the effectiveness of discussion based learning formats.
